Sanctuary

January 16, 2017

Remember this song?

"Lord, prepare me to be a sanctuary
Pure and holy, tried and true
With thanksgiving, I'll be a living
Sanctuary for you."

I have always liked this song. The words and the tune. Singing it slowly and quietly. And then finishing with a flair of an upbeat tempo and louder chorus as if to let everyone know of our commitment to God.

But what does it mean to be a "sanctuary?" We hear about sanctuary cities. Animal sanctuaries. Church sanctuaries. But what about us being "living sanctuaries" for our Lord? Most of the time the word sanctuary is used, it refers to a place of safety or refuge. Is that what we want to be for God? Maybe. Maybe not.

The original meaning of the word referred to a sacred place. And when we invite God and tell him we will be a sanctuary for him we become a sacred place. But I think we are anything but a place of refuge and safety for God. We become a holy, sacred instrument to carry out His will in this world. And sometimes that is anything but safe. It requires courage, conviction, and commitment that reaches past my own ability and uses the power of the Holy Spirit living inside of me.

Do we simply sing the words as a pretty song to stir our emotions? Or do we sing the words with a conviction to our soul to become a sacred place for the work of God to be done?

Be that sacred place, that sanctuary, God uses to tell His part of the world that you inhabit about the saving grace in His son Jesus!

"Lord, prepare me to be a sanctuary!"

Happy New Year

January 3, 2017

Happy New Years! It is hard to believe that 2016 is over. Time flies when you are having fun. Thank God for the past year, learn from your mistakes, grow from your tragedies, celebrate your successes, and seek God more intently in the new year of 2017.

I am not one for making "New Year Resolutions." It has been estimated that only about 8% of those who make new year resolutions actually keep them. So what is it that gets us so excited and focused to make the resolutions but lose that excitemen...

Doing the Right Thing!

July 28, 2015

Sometimes doing the right thing is difficult. You argue with yourself and can justify other actions, but deep down you know the right thing to do. And when you do the right thing it may be awkward and frustrating and uncomfortable. But it is still the right thing.

The right thing is always motivated by love. One of my favorite encounters that Jesus has is found in Matthew 22 and Mark 12. He is asked which commandment was the greatest. He responds by saying that Love is the greatest commandment...

What do you do with...?

June 6, 2015
There are so many things that we don't have the answers to.  At some level I believe that I can figure most things out.  But the reality is I don't have very many solid answers to most things. I struggle with several areas where I don't have the answers.  Here is a partial list of those things.

What do you do with...
  • ISIS
  • Caitlyn/Bruce Jenner and the transgender issues
  • Politics in America
  • Politics in churches
  • Heroin overdoses on the rise
  • Racial struggles in Ferguson, Baltimore, etc
  • Flooding, Earthqua...

Fifty Shades of Grey

February 15, 2015

Some of the content is from Dave Owens from the Wetzel Road Church of Christ in Liverpool, NY

Well, I had decided not to even give the movie a thought.  I wasn’t going to write about it or even acknowledge it.  However, it probably needs to be addressed.  So here it goes.

Lifesitenews.com carried an article saying: “Americans should boycott Fifty Shades of Grey on Valentine's Day, say more than 60,000 signatories and a growing coalition of groups that accused NBC Universal of ...

Quick Question to think about!

November 1, 2014
This has been on my mind a lot lately.  Maybe it is misguided.  Maybe it is spot on.

Do you ever think God looks down at his followers and just wants to ask, "Why are you making this so difficult?."

What is Your Passion?

October 4, 2014
Do you know what you are passionate about?  What is it that really inspires you?  What occupies your thoughts and motivates you to get involved?  Can you pinpoint the one thing that you really want to to?

I ask those questions because I ask myself those same questions every single day.  And I know the answer.  The problem is -- there always seems to be a barrier that stops me.  Things like finances, education, time and opportunity are just a few of the things that pop up.  The passion still st...
